What's new

• Western Boone Schools starts the new school year with a new superintendent, Stephen M. Sailor, 57. Sailor, who was assistant superintendent of Knox Community School Corp., replaces Ken Hull, who accepted a job in Speedway.

• District administrators are also searching for a new high school principal to replace Michael Gearheart, who retired. Assistant Principals Jerry Taylor and Jane Taylor will run the school until a replacement is found, Sailor said.

• This year, several students have switched schools as part of a limited open enrollment program at the district's elementary schools.

• The district will continue its push to focus on literacy and reading this year, Sailor said.

2005-06 school calendar

Aug. 15 -- First day of classes.

Sept. 2 -- Teacher in-service (no school).

Sept. 5 -- Labor Day (no school).

Oct. 19 -- Teacher in-service (two-hour delay).

Oct. 27-28 -- Fall vacation.

Nov. 9 -- Teacher in-service (two-hour delay).

Nov. 24-25 -- Thanksgiving vacation.

Dec. 23 -- End of first semester, last day of classes before winter vacation.

Jan. 10 -- School resumes.

Jan. 16 -- Martin Luther King Jr. Day (no school).

Feb. 8 -- Teacher in-service (two-hour delay).

Feb. 20 -- Presidents Day (no school).

March 15 -- Teacher in-service (no school).

April 3-7 -- Spring vacation.

May 5 -- No school (unless needed as a makeup day).

May 25 -- Last day of school, end of second semester.

May 27 -- Commencement.
