Greenfield Profile
Greenfield is the seat of government for Hancock County and
is located in the center of the county. It was incorporated as a city in 1876 with
a population of 2,023. The greatest single period of growth for the town began in
1887 when natural gas was discovered in the area. Today, Greenfield boasts thousands
of manufacturing, service, and professional jobs, and its unemployment rate has been
among the lowest in the nation in recent years. The city offers good schools and a
historic downtown area. The Parks and Recreation Department maintains six parks and
many facilities and programs including the Greenfield Senior Center, youth and adult
sports programs, and a summer day-care program. Annual events include the Riley
Festival, a celebration of the birthday of native son, James Whitcomb Riley, known
as the "Hoosier Poet." The festival is held downtown in October each year and
includes more than 400 arts and crafts displays.
