Greenwood

Profile
Founded in 1823, Greenwood was originally called Smocktown. Two years later, the community adopted the name Greenfield. But the name was changed to Greenwood eight years later because a Greenfield already existed in nearby Hancock County. Greenwood began its transformation from rural town to a bedroom community of Indianapolis about 35 years ago. Its population passed 11,000 around 1970 and now tops 36,000. The school system is one of the fastest-growing in the state. The Greenwood Park Mall is one of the largest suburban malls in the Indianapolis area. Within a short driving distance are more than a dozen municipal golf courses and lakes, including the 10,000 acre Monroe Reservoir, Indiana’s largest lake.
