Arthur E. Adams, 18, ran the inserting machine at the newly opened U.S. Army Finance Center in Lawrence on Oct. 1, 1953. The machine inserted checks to the dependents of soldiers serving around the world -- and sealed them in envelopes -- at a rate of 72 a minute. Adams worked for the Finance Center until January 1955, then joined the Army for three years. He later returned to the center before heading to Indiana University, from which he graduated in 1964. Adams worked in accounting and insurance sales for Lutheran Brotherhood, retiring in 2002, and still lives in Indianapolis. The 1.5 million-square-foot Finance Center was the largest Army building in existence. It was transferred to the Defense Department in 1991 and renovated from 1999 to 2003. (Maurice G.
