Joe joined the staff of The Indianapolis News as a picture editor in 1990. When The Indianapolis Star and The News merged in 1995, he became picture editor for the three metro sections. In June 1998 he became the photographer for Metro West, now called StarWest.
Before coming to Indianapolis, Joe worked for a daily suburban edition of the Los Angeles Times from 1984-1990, covering the San Fernando Valley, Antelope Valley, and Ventura County. He also worked at the Arizona Daily Star in Tucson from 1971-1984.
He attended Marquette University in Milwaukee and Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He was born and raised in Darien, Conn.
