Someday, the puppies playing at Community Hospital East this Saturday might work at nursing homes, providing companionship to residents. Or they might work as guide dogs for visually impaired owners.

FOUNTAINTOWN
A 60-year-old Shelby County man was fatally burned after a fast-burning fire broke out in the cab of his parked pickup.

PAWS, or Partners Animal Welfare Society, offers pets for adoption at the Greenfield/Hancock County Animal Control Shelter. There is no cost to adopt, but pets must be vaccinated, spayed or neutered after adoption. Local participating vets offer a discount for those services.

The Common Threads Quilt Guild will meet at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Mount Comfort Church New Family Life Center, 3179 N. County Road 600 West (Mount Comfort Road).

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS GOLF
New Palestine's boys golf team advanced to the state meet a year ago for the first time in school history. The Dragons returned three of their top five golfers from a team that finished second in the sectional and third in what is considered to be one of the toughest regionals in the state.

New Palestine's softball team, the defending Class 3A state champs, will compete in this weekend's 12th annual Wendy's Spring Classic High School Softball Invitational in Ashland, Ohio. Twenty-four teams representing seven states will take part.
