Encouraging academics Among its community
endeavors, The Indianapolis Star also sponsors academic
pursuits:
Academic All-Stars: Annually, The Star recognizes
Indiana's top 40 high school students. Each year, it names The
Indianapolis Star Academic All-Stars.
Pulliam Fellowships: Within its own field, The Star
offers annual 10-week summer fellowships for college students who
major in journalism.
For 30 years, the Pulliam Journalism Fellowship has
awarded 472 internships at The Star and The Arizona Republic,
formerly owned by Central Newspapers Inc. The program has continued
under Gannett Co. Former Star owner Eugene C. Pulliam founded the
fellowship in 1974 to provide an intensive "finishing school" for
each class. More than 56 percent stay in newspaper work.
Among the ranks are four Pulitzer Prize winners and
Barbara Henry, The Star's current president and publisher. A 1985
Pulliam fellow, Daniel Pearl, was kidnapped and killed last year in
Pakistan while reporting on the war against terrorism.
