Endowment of philanthropy

The endowment of philanthropy provides for its stability and permanence. Many good causes are lost through the lack of just such stability and permanency as an endowment would provide -- and on the other hand, there is a remarkable multiplicity of endowment errors. . . .

Probably the worst of all forms of endowment so far as philanthropy is concerned is that which comes from some man's hobby. A wise endowment is the one where the purpose of the gift is described in such broad terms as to meet all future contingencies.

Buy American

As we celebrate Christmas in our homes this year, I wonder how many of us will be thinking of the war victims ahead and how they are observing the birthday of the Prince of Peace.

I know at least one way we in America can be sure we are helping their position -- and that is by making sure that none of the presents we buy, none of the tinsel and bulbs with which we trim our trees are manufactured by enemies of civilization.

Evans laughs

When I read or hear something said about "tax reform," I can hardly keep from laughing. Have you noticed it is mostly being called for, in fact demanded, by the very people that over the years have been asking for more government handouts, more government services? These people, both the "liberal" politicians and their constituents, should have known that more and more government will cost more and more money.

Instead of asking for tax reform, they should be demanding less government spending at all levels. I sincerely believe this is the only possible way to get lower taxes.

An unsafe America if we tolerate a tyrant

All Americans should take a long look back at the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The terror of that day should be forever etched on our minds. It is that very terror, and worse, that will revisit our homeland if we fail to take bold steps to stamp it out at the source.

I thank God that we have a president in George W. Bush with the guts to step up to the plate in these perilous times. And we have the words of the Iron Lady of the South, Condoleezza Rice, "Inaction is not an option."

Speaking before USS Oak Hill's crew last June, Gen. Tommy Franks said, "These colors don't run!"

I have a vision of a safer America and freer world for my children. Allowing tyrants to foul the air we breathe is the surest way to kill that vision.
